The evolution of mobile technology...

You may think that the history of mobile carriers is a relatively modern thing, so you may be surprised to hear that it goes back to the 1940s when companies such as ATT in the USA offered city based mobile radio telephone services using a handful of radio channels. Now, only a few dozen people in that city could use the system at the same time, calls had to be put through by operators and the equipment filled your car boot, but it was a start.

If, on the other hand, you thought that mobiles go back to the 1970s, you’d have given a less geeky and more accepted answer. Motorola’s Martin Cooper made the world’s first mobile phone call in 1973, but it wasn’t until 1983 that the first commercial cellular network, using 1G analogue technology was launched in the US, Vodaphone being the first in the UK in January 1985, with Cellnet hot on their heels. The communications revolution had started.

2G came in the 1990s and texting, SMS, in 1992. The 2000s brought 3G and with it emails, web browsing, video calls and the ability to download music. Importantly what also happened was that the carriers shifted from selling ‘minutes’ to selling data plans. It was a new way of thinking.

And then it all happened! 4G in the 2010s, smartphones, high-definition video streaming, social media on the move, mobile banking and all the other benefits our phones give us and which we take for granted. All this changed the way that the mobile carriers operated and the relationship between us and them. Carriers started to compete on coverage, data allowances, speed and, believe it or not, customer service.

Which brings us up to date, with 5G promising gigabyte speeds, lower latency (quicker reaction time), extraordinary connectivity and different and almost unimaginable industrial applications. But another significant development happened in the 2010s, and that was the appearance of what are called MVNOs, Mobile Virtual Network Operators who lease capacity from the carriers and then compete amongst themselves to give their customers the best deals they can…which is where we come in!

Our intention is, and always has been, to give our customers the best possible all-round service, combining unbeatable advice with hardware, and unbeatable broadband and mobile data packages. You’ll get unlimited data now from the carriers, but they have overheads that mean they can’t easily compete with a company such as TP Tele. We can give you unlimited everything SIMs (minutes, texts and data) for less than going to the carriers directly, so not only can you save money but you’ll get better support and advice. What more could you ask for? Give us a call!
