Could slow broadband be costing you £10K per year?

Have you ever had one of those lightbulb moments when you realise that the amount you spend on your daily Costa-lotta could buy you a small car if you cut it out for a year, or that the cost of having that extra Google Photos storage would buy you two return flights to somewhere nice? Those better heeled amongst us will take these things in their stride but those having to be more financially aware, well, we notice how these things stack up. At least we do when these little incremental costs crop up as items on our statements, but how about all those unnecessary costs that simply and quietly get lost amongst our regular expenditure, those costs we just don’t notice?

Here’s one of them. Your broadband. Let us explain by starting with a question: do you think your business relies more or less on broadband than it did maybe five or 10 years ago? I suspect your answer will be ‘more’, what with all our extra usage of things in the cloud. Consider Office 365, cloud storage, online accounts, VoIP phones and now AI, it all mounts up. Now consider the cost of your connection, typically between £30 and £40 a month for a service that is advertised as fast, so what’s the problem?

It’s this. Let’s for a moment assume that you have ten people in the business and now imagine that each of you loses an average of two minutes per working hour because you’re having to wait for your broadband to catch up with itself, uploading or downloading or just loading. Let’s further assume that the average salary of each of your 10 employees is £30k…can you see where this is going? If we do the maths, then the cumulative time lost over a year is 584 and a bit hours which, multiplied out gives you a value of time wasted of, wait for it, £10k, which is £833 a month. Ouch! And all for the sake of that extra few pounds that would have given you a genuinely faster broadband connection and repaid your extra investment in month one.
