Internet and the School Holidays

Back to school

Have you ever noticed how your internet connection can be really quite good sometimes, and painfully slow at others?  That at those odd times that you’re on line at three in the morning it’s amazingly quick, but that the opposite is true once it’s after nine?

There’s a good reason for this, and it’s as simple as supply and demand, or, better put, demand and supply. There’s a finite amount of server power out there, and if the demand is too great your broadband connection starts to not cope, at which point, rather than not give you any connection at all, it shares its supply amongst everyone who’s on line. This can result in a highly restricted supply, especially if you’re at the end of the internet line. Think of a leaking hosepipe with you at as the nozzle…

Having understood the above, you might have noticed that your connection was even slower over the last few weeks when schools were closed for the summer, and there’s a good reason for this. If you have kids, what have they been doing with all the spare time on their hands? If they’ve been out exercising and making the most of what sunshine we’ve had – congratulations, but the odds are they’ve been on line, playing games, watching Netflix and generally keeping your broadband connection busy. Multiply this by the several hundred thousands kids kicking their heels at home and the effect on your internet speed can be more than irksome…and of course you’ll notice the same effect most evenings when the kids get home from school…

Of course none of this might matter to you, but if, like many, you run a home business, or you just want a better, more responsive broadband connection, then a good place to start would be with our broadband speed checker, you’ll find it here. You might want to do this at different times of the day to see the difference. Then why not fill in the form to find out what you should be getting. Then give us a ring!
